The Phenomenon we call "The Leslies"

If you've visited cakelava.com recently, you may have noticed that on the first page alone we have 4 cakes named leslie/lesley (variation in spelling). We have the newly added "lesley p", the "leslie h", the "lesley e" and the "leslie t", and let's not forget the "leslie r" cake on page 3 of the Weddings slideshow. All five cakes for the Leslie/Lesley's were made in the past year and they are all very different. I remember talking on the phone to Liz who was working for event coordination company Weddings by Grace & Mona and told her I was calling about "Leslie's" cake. She said "which one? -- Leslie T or Leslie R" and I said "Leslie R" and she replied "that's Jen's Leslie. My Leslie is Leslie T, let me transfer you." Now this response was nothing personal, it was more about who was working on which bride's wedding, but I should have realized with all the different Leslie/Lesley's we had on the books (5 in the past year) that one day we could be facing a cake-naming conundrum on cakelava.com.

Just having a bunch of brides named Leslie/Lesley is more of a coincidence than a phenomenon. However when 4 out of 12 of our Featured Weddings in the course of a year are named Leslie/Lesley, there's something strange going on. Leslie R was the first Leslie chosen to be a Featured Wedding last year, and she was actually chosen by all of you! You may recall ...

Then there was Leslie T, whose November 2008 wedding was our January 2009 Featured Wedding ...

These are 2 of the 4 Leslies. The other 2 are about to be featured, one right after the other, and no, it wasn't planned that way. All Featured Weddings are selected based on criteria none of which includes the bride's name, but I gotta admit it is pretty strange.

Join us back here tomorrow when we reveal our next Featured Wedding, Lesley and Jason. Incidentally, Lesley's makeup artist was Leslie Gallagher...

Aloha, til next time!

The Champ is Here!

Rick gave this sculpted baby shower cake a one-two punch. The baby's father was a boxer/martial artist, and his grandfather was also a boxer. The couple had selected the name "Knox" for their child. It was all perfect. Perfectly appropriate name, fun cake and the writing "The Champ is here!" made this themed cake a real knock-out!

Today we received this enthusiastic Thank You note from our client:

Oh my gosh the cake was absolutely amazing, everyone was totally astonished! It was the best thing about the party. The father didn't want to cut it, he loved it soooo much. He ended up not cutting it at the party, they had another shower in the evening he cut half of one glove and almost cried. The wife made him take it but he seriously wanted to freeze it and save it for the first birthday, he's hilarious. Everyone couldn't believe the detail and how real it looked. Tell Rick thank you so much, everyone asked me where it was from so I'm sure you will be getting lots of calls in the future. Thanks again

A Fairy, Flowers, and Butterflies Cake

This was a very satisfying week of cakes. I think about all the clients' smiles we saw and how one cake differed greatly from the next one. I fell in love with each and every cake this week, including this flowers, butterflies and fairy themed birthday cake we made for Siena's birthday. Rick made a handcrafted custom fairy figure standing on top of a flower surrounded by butterflies. It was a gorgeous cake, so pretty and cheerful and perfect for a sweet little girl. The cake was also colorful inside with our Guava Lava flavor. Check back next week to see another flowers and butterflies cake (sans fairy) we recently finished. It's quite different from this one but just as cute!

Enjoy your weekend!

The Pink and Silver Lining in Her Cloud

If you live here or were visiting Oahu last weekend, you know how dreary the weather has been. Saturday's rain was downright depressing, and enough to bring a happy bride who travelled all the way from Alaska down too. Lucky for our bride Kelli, she has a great friend named Kim looking out for her who also travelled a long way (Texas) for the wedding and purchased for her a beautiful light pink, silver and white wedding cake. Even if it wasn't in the cards for the two ladies to lie out on the beach and work on their tans this weekend, the Happy Cake Gods were smiling down on them and making sure Kelli's Big Day would be celebrated in style. Kim, who ordered Kelli's wedding cake, gave us the bride's colors and ask for a swirly design with a "V" monogram on top of it and the rest was up to Rick. She selected some yummy cake flavors -- our Chai Latte and Strawberries Chantilly, for this intimate wedding which took place at a property previously owned by John Travolta and Kelly Preston. Since we arrived at the property before the bride Kelli, we never had a chance to meet her, but both Kim and her mother loved the cake and knew the bride would too. Congratulations to the bride and groom! Kelli, we hope this beautiful cake was a ray of pink sunshine in your day.

Aloha, til next time ...
