The "Gwen" Cake

It's been nearly 1 year since our couple Gwen and Josh were married, and even longer since Rick designed their wedding cake. As Gwen and Josh prepare to celebrate their first anniversary, little did they know that their wedding cake has become a desirable design by a number of other brides. We currently have two brides booked who have requested the "Gwen" cake, with only a slight modification. Earlier this year we received a request from a bride wanting us to ship the "Gwen" cake to her wedding on the Big Island, though we were unable to do it. Obviously the "Gwen" cake has that certain something inspiring "Gwen envy" but it's important to point out in all fairness, that Rick's "Gwen" cake was actually inspired by his "Tish" cake, made for our bride Tish's wedding in 2006. Gwen saw and fell in love with the "Tish" design and we used this as a basis for creating her and Josh's cake.

For Gwen and Josh's cake, Rick changed the tiki style, bamboo color and flower type from cymbidium orchids to the hibiscus, to work with the couple's wedding colors and decor. Speaking of colors and decor, Gwen and Josh's wedding was gorgeous and so beautifully captured by Chrissy Lambert Photography. We showcased their wedding last year on the blog but our photos didn't do the event justice.

Tomorrow we will feature their wedding on the blog. Gwen and Josh were gracious enough to share with our readers their wedding images. For a cake as desirable as theirs has become, we wanted you to "meet" the Gwen and Josh behind the "Gwen" cake.

Thank you, Gwen. Thank you Josh! We're wishing you both the best!

Aloha, til tomorrow!

Marchelle and Tom

OK, let's be honest. We're all painfully aware today is tax day, and if like us, Uncle Sam loves you, then we could all use a nice diversion and what could be nicer than looking at pretty images of a beautiful bride and her groom and sharing in their special day. A big Mahalo! to our couple Marchelle and Tom for recently sending us these images. They may not have realized at the time that they would end up on our blog, but when we saw the images, including the ones of their wedding and groom's cakes which are far better than the ones we took, we decided that even though we have showcased their wedding cake and sculpted groom's standing guitar cake before, (see "She's a Little Bit Elegant, He's a Little Bit Rock-N-Roll") that it was definitely worth revisiting. Having the elegance of a Hollywood starlet, Marchelle, who lives in Baltimore was such a sweet, fun gal in person and we were thrilled to have met her! Though she noticed us in a magazine and on the internet prior to contacting us, we were also told that Duff and the Charm City Cakes crew gave us the thumbs up, so we'd like to send them a shout out for thinking of us!

UR Birthday

We had a lot of fun making this MICKEY'S Fine Malt Liquor bottle for Joe's birthday on Saturday. We love the addition of the puzzle on the bottle cap, something MICKEY'S is known for. Joe's fiancee, who ordered the cake as a gift for him, had requested for us to put the letters "UR" and the birthday cake icon which we thought was fantastic! We didn't realize the surprise reveal of the cake would take place at our studio. When they walked in to pick up the cake, the couple was pretty blown away and got very smiley, not unlike those goofy smiles you experience when you've been drinking too much. As we placed the cake into their vehicle, they were still all smiles which then turned into tenderness and some laughter, and you could definitely tell they were sharing a special moment together. Rick and I went back inside and commented how sweet they were, and how happy they seemed with their bottle of MICKEY'S, and that put a smile on our faces.

Four Cute Little Guys and Their Ginormous Rocket

Last Saturday, as we were out delivering the sculpted Scooby and "The Fun Cake", four cute little guys named Leo, Annie, Quincy and June, better known as "Little Einsteins" were patiently waiting in their ginormous sculpted flying ship, "Rocket" for our return. It must have been hard for them to watch us bring out the Scooby cake and wonder why they weren't picked first. We explained to them it wasn't preference but Scooby needed to be at his event first. It's difficult to tell by looking at the photo how large this cake is, so you'll have to take our word for it, it's pretty ginormous and quite heavy. BIG cake to make a BIG impression. The occasion was Caleb's "Little Einsteins" themed birthday party and our little guys flew in on their musical ship "Rocket" to help him celebrate with his family and friends. Its hard to tell who was more excited about the cake, little Caleb or his parents, and we were excited to bring him his special gift. It was a perfect ending to a perfectly animated day of cakes.
