Sou and Takako's Wedding

All images courtesy of VISIONARI

If you follow our blog, the names Sou and Takako may be familiar to you. We showcased their super cute, whimsical wedding cake on the blog last month, and after receiving images from their photographers at VISIONARI, we thought our lovely couple from Japan would be a delightful way to end the week. During the process of designing their cake we became very fond of this sweet and gracious couple. They were so excited about their mystery design that they would leave completely up to Rick. We didn't have the opportunity to meet Sou and Takako prior to the wedding, and felt lucky to be introduced to them via VISIONARI's gorgeous images. Sou and Takako did things a little different from many couples, which was just fine with us. Rather than matching the elegant style of their wedding to their cake, Rick designed their cake independently of anything they were using at the wedding. It was the colorful POP, and burst of whimsy in their otherwise formal and elegant wedding. We'd be hard pressed to choose a favorite photo -- they are all spectacular! -- but one of the most meaningful to us was seeing the look of happiness on Sou and Takako's faces as they cut into their wedding cake. It's that look of appreciation that makes all of our efforts worth it! Thank you, Sou and Takako for sharing your special day with us! Mahalo to Hiko, Jon and Mike at VISIONARI for the images!

Dad's Baseball Cake

In the early part of May, Rick's parents flew across the country to spend some time with us and take in the beautiful sights of Oahu. We felt lucky that we had a chance to see them since it's difficult for us to get away to visit them because of our business. We tried to clear our schedule as much as time would allow to spend with them, and limited the number of orders we accepted for that weekend. Not that you would know this based on the six cakes Rick made, which included the sculpted R2-D2, the orange B&B cake featured yesterday, the black fondant military cake, the Doctor McGillicuddy's bottle among others. Our intent was to spend more time with his mother and father sightseeing and less time doing cakes. Of course, you can't have a parent come to visit at a time close to their birthday and not make them a birthday cake, so we decided to make Rick's Dad his very own New York Yankees sculpted baseball cake in honor of his favorite team. We didn't want to go over the top for his cake because that would take time away from our visit with them and it's more important to have that time together than say, a Yankee Stadium cake, and what would the four of us do with all that cake anyway? It was the perfect amount to give us all a BIG slice of cake with vanilla ice cream (yum!) and still have plenty of leftovers. For his dad we chose our Kona Toffee Crunch with white cake and put a layer of ganache in there as well. He loves coffee, the taste and smell of it. In the photo above, Rick's father is holding a t-shirt he got that is dyed with coffee. We had a great visit with his parents and in the blink of an eye they were gone. We will treasure our memories and photos of the visit until we see them again. Happy Birthday Dad! Love, Rick and Sasha.

Our B and B in Beautiful Orange

Ever since our "B&B" cake was first published in The Bride & Bloom Magazine, for their "Color Pairings" feature in the Fall 2008 issue, we've had brides commenting on Rick's design, wanting some version of it for their own wedding. Given the precise proportions used and yellow and mossy green tones we worked with for the shoot, the exact "B&B" cake designed for the magazine wouldn't be the right fit for every bride. Our clients Amy and Carlo saw our B&B cake and fell in love with it and wanted the same cake made for their North Shore wedding, but instead of the yellow and mossy greens we used, they requested shades of orange, which we thought would be just gorgeous, and it was! The couple wanted a cake that was as tasty as it was beautiful and ordered 3 flavors for their cake: our Lemon Pucker, Totally Turtle and Guava Lava.

the end product, "Color Pairings" Fall 2008. Two cake designers per issue. We were honored to be asked. The cake looked amazing with the components they paired with it!

Monkeying Around

We did our share of monkeying around over the weekend, starting with this monkey themed birthday cake for a little boy. Rick set the jungle scene with palm trees, bananas and of course lots of monkeys that were having way too much fun before the party even started. The cake was super cute, super delicious, and got a super reaction from the parents! They chose our Totally Turtle and Local Kine Special flavors for their little monkey and his birthday guests.

See our portfolio on cakelava.com, and join us back here tomorrow for more cakes.

Aloha, til next time!
