Her Hello Kitty and His Miami Dolphins

It takes a special bride to order a Hello Kitty Wedding Cake. Jessica was that bride. She was a fun, adventurous, anything-goes bride and we were absolutely tickled that she wanted a Hello Kitty Wedding Cake because we had never made one before. We've made plenty of Hello Kitty cakes over the years, a number of which have been showcased on our blog, but this time she was going matrimonial and the cake had to be even more spectacular! Jessica left all the details of her cake up to Rick. We met with her and Eric, discussed their colors and the theme and she was completely open to whatever Rick wanted to do. We knew she wanted something girly and playful and since Eric was getting his own groom's cake with whatever he wanted, Jessica could have her Hello Kitty Wedding Cake, and both would be happy.

Eric's Miami Dolphins football helmet was a perfect compliment to Jessica's Hello Kitty wedding cake. Rick spent a good amount of time on both of these cakes. The helmet is a difficult, labor intensive design to make and when you add a logo and a visor to it, it's even more involved. Rick wanted to give Eric and Jessica two cakes they would never forget. They went colorful and fruity for their wedding cake, with our signature Rainbowlicious flavor, and for Eric's groom's cake, they went more traditional but with a twist, and selected our Totally Turtle flavor. We hope Jessica and Eric had a fabulous wedding day! We had a blast making their cakes and wish them the best in their new life together!

Aloha, til tomorrow!

Boohbah!

We get a lot of interesting character cake requests. One of the stranger ones we've gotten was for a "Boohbah" cake for Maxwell's birthday. The "Boohbah" is quite strange looking I have to say. It's shape is reminiscent of Grimace or Jabba the Hutt and the word "cute" doesn't immediately come to mind when looking at a Boohbah, yet there is something sort of oddly mesmorizing about them. Maybe it's because their world is colorful and psychadelic and totally bizarre. They are furry, slothlike and lack a defined neck, but boy do these guys know how to party! We were excited about the theme and so were Maxwell's parents, and Rick went to town on this one. No comment about what in our past years may have prepared us to make a cake like this, though I'm suddenly taken back to living in Berkeley (Berzerk-ly), California in the 90's and I'm sure this cake transports Rick somewhere as well... Boohbah!

Aloha, til next time!

When Hello Kitty Meets Donutella- Sweet!

We've been very thankful for all the recent and forthcoming press we've received, but in the midst of it all, numerous cakes have been designed and delivered, smiles and letters have been received and as I write this, more cakes are in the works.

Some of you may already know that Rick is a donut fiend. If we were still living in L.A. with access to a plethora of yummy donut shops, we'd be making regular stops on our way home from work. Our nearest Krispie Kreme is on the island of Maui, right near the airport, and each time we visit, stopping there is a must! We recently made a birthday cake where one of the requested characters was "Donutella", a Tokidoki who is basically Hello Kitty in a donut costume. She is quite adorable as a donut and hopefully Rick didn't salivate all over it while he was making her. Just kidding, but seriously ... this cake was super cute, and it brought together the Hello Kitty and Donutella characters our client requested and her candy and sweets theme beautifully! Every piece was sweetly handcrafted and got just as sweet a reaction from the client:

OMG!! The cake was so beautiful and AWESOME! We had so many compliments and people were asking was it all cake. BTW, the cake was so DELICIOUS and TASTY. The fondant was just the right kind of sweetness we like. the hello kitty and donutella characters on the cake were so cute!!! Thank you so much for making our daughter's party a very successful and fun occasion for our guests. Thanks again and I hope we can do other projects together.

and tomorrow ... a Boohbah-rific cake!

Aloha, til next time!

Seaside Sweets on Brides.com

If May was the month of May-hem, June keeps getting sweeter by the day! We have quite a few new cakes to share which we will do starting tomorrow, but we're also super excited about some of the rockin' publicity we've received in the past few days, including this fabulous feature on Brides.com! Brides.com needs no introduction. It's the website affiliate of BRIDE'S magazine and a fantastic resource for any bride planning her wedding. When one of the Editors at Brides.com approached us looking for ocean or beach-themed wedding cakes for their upcoming summer wedding package, we were very excited and sent in several of our designs in this theme. It wasn't long before we heard back from them and found out they were interested in possibly featuring a few of the cakes, but we wouldn't know which one(s) actually made the cut until the feature was released online. You can imagine how happy we were when we saw the feature, which was just released on Brides.com, and saw 3 of our cakes in it! We were thrilled about our cakes, and for our 3 couples -- Janet and Todd, Bonnie and Chris, and Reiko and Jason, whose wedding and groom's cakes were featured, and for our awesome photographers REDHEARTPHOTO, VISIONARI and Michael Sendrey Photography who provided the images.

To see the "Seaside Sweets" cake feature click here or the photo above.

We thought it would be fun to show some images from one of the couple's weddings whose cake is showcased in the feature. Reiko and Jason are an adorable couple who had the wedding cake on the site with the small fish and bubbles pattern. VISIONARI had shared with us these beautiful images of Reiko and Jason's wedding shortly after the celebration and we've held onto them for the perfect opportunity. It seems perfect right about now. Enjoy!

Special thanks to the Editors at Brides.com, Reiko and Jason, Janet and Todd, and Bonnie and Chris, as well as their photographers, VISIONARI , Michael Sendrey Photography, REDHEARTPHOTO!

Come back tomorrow to see some of our latest work! In the meantime, check out our portfolio of cakes on cakelava.com.
