Next Featured Wedding Sneak Peek - Jaime and Matthew

All images courtesy of Chrissy Lambert Photography

Our next Featured Wedding on cakelava.com is a stylish and contemporary black and white affair for Jaime and Matthew, who were married on August 2, 2009 at Lanikuhonua, in Ko Olina, Oahu. If you frequent our blog, you are probably familiar with the venue Lanikuhonua, one of the most sought after locations to marry on Oahu. If you are a bride eyeing this lovely tropical location, plan to book at least 1 year in advance, as the dates go fast! Our bride Jaime from the beginning came to us well in advance of her date with a clear vision of what she wanted for their wedding. The colors would be ivory and black, the vibe chic and contemporary, and the flowers both tropical and romantic. For their wedding cake Jaime and Matthew wanted a design in black and ivory with elegant quilting on the fondant, stripes in the design and a tropical flower pattern. Their wedding cake is the "jaime f" cake on cakelava.com and is a striking design with varying textures, heights and artistic methods used. It beautifully matched the style and colors of the wedding.

The wedding cake was just one of many details that made this wedding a perfect Feature! Chrissy Lambert, whose images have been showcased numerous times in our Featured Weddings, captured Jaime and Matthew's wedding beautifully! Dianna Shitanishi of Hawaii Weddings & Events provided wedding day coordination and design. Flowergirls Hawaii added their usual beautiful flair to the wedding florals. Bruce Watanabe and his team at Catering Connection made the yummy cuisine. Jaime looked radiant in her Monique Lhuillier gown, and Matthew was handsome in his black suit and Hawaiian wedding Maile lei. Rick and I have noticed that many, if not most of our wedding couples are interracial (as are we) like Jaime and Matthew, which is something Hawaii is known for. A fabulous blend of colors and races uniting in a place of natural beauty.

Congratulations to Jaime and Matthew! It was a such pleasure to work with both of them and we wish them the very best! Look for Jaime and Matthew's Featured Wedding on cakelava.com in the near future. In the meantime enjoy this sneak peek.

Aloha, til next time!

Monkey Orthodontics

We're only half-way through "Rocktober" and we're having a hard time remembering what cakes we did when this month. Thankfully we have a calendar to refer to and I'm reminded that this cute Paul Frank monkey cake was made on Rocktober 4th for a graduation party at Lanikuhonua. Though I may be fuzzy on the exact date of this cake, I'm very clear on the details. Our client Diane and her event coordinator, Lissa Wilson of The Wedding Planners, contacted us to design a cake with a Paul Frank theme for her husband's graduation from Orthodontic school. Rick sculpted the Paul Frank monkey -- we know his name is Julius, we just call him the Paul Frank monkey -- out of cake and put some braces on him along with dental accessories around him including toothpaste, toothbrush and dental floss. Aside from hiring Lissa Wilson who we always enjoy working with, to plan her husband's special day, the super-fab Yvonne Design did the florals, lighting and lounge. Visionari photographed the event, Catering Connection made the cuisine and cakelava made the cake. The color scheme involved a lot of orange, which was also used on the cake. A huge success all around and Diane and her husband Marcus loved their cake. We wish Marcus much success in his new career in orthodontics!

A Wedding Cake For The (Love) Birds

From the beginning, Krista and Christopher's wedding had all the right style components. A soft color palette of ivory and blush. A perfect fusion of romantic and woody elements in her florals, and the sweetest handmade birds cake topper she wanted to use for her wedding cake. This gracious Southern bride made our job easy. Rick designed an exquisite wedding cake with a single romantic handcrafted flower with lots of petals, along with some Dusty Miller, yellow buttons and guinea feathers, all handmade. There were beautiful textured pieces on the cake and the adorable bride and groom bird toppers looked precious! Krista and Christopher's wedding cake was soft and romantic on the outside and rich and flavorful on the inside, having chosen our Peanut Butter Fudgey and Chocolate Dream flavors to share with their guests. Congratulations to our fabulous love birds Krista and Christopher!

Go Girl! -- Girl Fest Hawaii 2009

We're very excited to announce our involvement this year with Girl Fest Hawaii. cakelava is one of the sponsors of the week long festival taking place throughout Honolulu on November 7th-14th. We were asked to make a cake for the soft opening art gallery reception of GiRL FeST and have a special art cake planned. At the time we were contacted by GiRL FeST, we were already booked for the week of the event, but the cause was just to good to pass up. Rick and I both felt it was important for us to lend our support to GiRL FeST Hawaii and to the artists and volunteers who generously donate their talents and time to the events. The cake Rick is designing for the festival is a surprise and will be posted on our blog and website after the event.

If you aren't familiar with GiRL FeST, which is sponsored by the Safe Zone Foundation, there is a wealth of information on their website. The mission of GiRL FeST Hawaii is to help prevent violence against women and girls through art and education. Their hope is to make a change by presenting positive representations of women through the artistic mediums of film, spoken word, dance, art and music, in addition to offering lectures and workshops that address such important themes as identity, body image, self empowerment, social change and providing methods for helping them prevent violence in their relationships. This is the 6th year for GiRL FeST and it has become a huge success with a ton of support from the sponsors and local community and attracts thousands of people. GiRL FeST also occurs in the Bay Area, Seattle and other cities. A full program for GiRL FeST is located on the Girl Fest Hawaii website. We highly encourage all women to take advantage of this amazing event!
