A Pretty Kitty in Aloha Attire

www.cakelava.com
It's great to be back in the swing of things once again! Now that the hard part of the book writing is behind us, we are able to focus more of our time towards making cakes. In the past couple of months we've had an opportunity to make some amazing cakes, some of which have been posted on our Facebook page. Thank you to everyone who has left us comments and sent us emails of appreciation, and apologies to anyone we had to turn away due to other commitments.

It's been a while since Rick made a sculpted Hello Kitty cake and we've been looking forward to this super cute version wearing a Hawaiian print sundress for months. The cake was made for the baby daughter of a couple whose wedding cake Rick made a few years ago. It's always a treat when a couple returns to us for their children's cakes. To be able to do one of our favorite characters in a new way makes it even better! The couple selected our yummy Guava cake for the inside of their sculpted cake. Pretty in Pink inside and out! Thank you to Delphine and Ray for including us in your sweet girl's special day!

Ballerina Kitties

What I would have given to have a cake as cute as this when I was growing up and dancing ballet. One Hello Kitty ballerina is super cute and to have them dancing all around the cake is over the top adorable! Rick worked his magic on this pink and purple birthday cake for Kaelyn, giving her dancing kitties, a big beautiful bow, flowers, swirlies, diamonds, all the things that little girls (and us big girls) love. Our client's requests were to "please use pink" and to make it fun and cute. Mission accomplished! We love this cake!

Hello Kitty Doll Birthday Cake

It's a good thing Rick likes making the Hello Kitty cakes because we sure get a lot of requests for them. We've found the interest in Hello Kitty spans all ages and ethnicities and isn't limited to just birthdays. Last year Rick made a Hello Kitty themed wedding cake, that sat next to a Miami Dolphins football helmet groom's cake. What a fun couple! Just recently Rick sculpted a super adorable Hello Kitty doll cake for Lyn's 26th birthday party. Lyn ordered the birthday cake for herself, which we thought was just great, and she was a lot of fun to work with. She specified colors (black and hot pink) and the color of the bow on her left ear. She chose her flavor, Strawberries Chantilly, which she would share with her friends and co-workers of the restaurant she managed, where the cake was also delivered.

Rick sculpted his Hello Kitty completely out of cake, which is a difficult task considering how large her head is, but that is also what makes Hello Kitty so darn cute! No rice cereal treats or styrofoam was used. I'm glad we weren't there to witness the decapitation of the cute little kitty as Lyn cut into her birthday cake. I'd probably have to look away.

Purple and Pink Hello Kitty Cake

We regularly receive orders for Hello Kitty cakes, and this month we had two of them. Each one is a unique design so Rick always has his work cut out for him. This purple and pink Hello Kitty cake was made for Laylah's birthday party. Rick selected daisies and butterflies to use on the cake and went with an elegant striped design for the base colors. Coincidentally, the weekend we made Laylah's Hello Kitty cake occurred during a time when we had a photographer, editors, and translator from Japan shoot cakelava for a Japanese magazine feature, and this Hello Kitty cake was photographed professionally for the magazine. This is a photo we took of the cake prior to delivery. The cake was very cute in person and looked right at home with the Hello Kitty decor at the venue.

More to come soon!

Hello Kitty Goes Glam

MAC and I go WAY back, and I'm not talking about our MAC computers, though we have a history with them as well. I'm referring to M.A.C. cosmetics (Make-up Art Cosmetics). I recall my first MAC purchase back when I was living in San Francisco, in the early 90's. It was a lipstick and quickly followed with another lipstick and matching lipliner. At the time I wore a lot of black and so did the MAC girls -- it was a match made in heaven. At some point I walked into the MAC store and bought "Viva Glam" lipstick which was a rich, true red and whose spokesperson at the time was RuPaul. Then later it was the eyeshadows and of course the lipgloss, sorry Lipglass. I thought it was the coolest stuff to hit the market. Loved the colors, loved the packaging and really loved their "recycling" program. MAC has always been ahead of the game in the cosmetics world so it came as no surprise that they would pair up with the swanky fab "It" girl who melts the hearts of pre-teens and us thirty-somethings alike, Hello Kitty!

Today's post we're dedicating to our client Becky, who flew in from an outer island to celebrate her 22nd birthday on Saturday with our MAC Hello Kitty Rainbowlicious flavored birthday cake. Though we can take the credit for the design, the idea was all Becky's. She contacted us specifically asking for a "MAC Hello Kitty" cake in pink, black and white. As many of you know, we are fans of Hello Kitty and Rick always enjoys making Hello Kitty cakes, but this one took a little more research since Rick doesn't wear MAC and they recently released the Hello Kitty line. Becky left the design completely up to Rick, and was so excited about her birthday cake. We knew when designing the cake that we wanted to include the shiny black MAC Hello Kitty doll,
which is available for purchase at the MAC store. Rick handcrafted one for her and placed it on top of the cake surrounded by all her favorite cosmetics, also handcrafted.

The reason we're dedicating this post to Becky is we sadly, did not have a chance to meet her in person and would have loved to. We were coming from a wedding on the other side of the island and arrived just before her. We took the cake -- elevator to 18th floor, followed by balancing the cake while riding 2 escalators -- to the Top of Waikiki restaurant, where Ms. Kitty had the perfect black and glam environment overlooking all of Waikiki, and a slew of black clad servers watching over her. She also had her own paparazzi. Several restaurant diners took her photo while we were there.

Becky sent us the sweetest Thank you note on Sunday:

Rick & Sasha,

I just wanted to THANK YOU guys SO very much for giving me such an AMAZING cake!

I absolutely LOVED it and so did everyone else!!!

Thank you for all of the love and time you put into my personal Hello Kitty cake. Mmmmmm and the cake itself tasted like heaven! The only think I was disappointed about was not being able to meet you two and thank you in person : )

Again thank you so much! And you'll defiantly be hearing from me for all future events I have in Oahu : )

Becky

Thank you, Becky, for giving us the opportunity to mix two of our favorite things together. We're glad the cake and your birthday was a huge success and we look forward to working with you again soon!

Hello Kitty, She's Our Girl!

What is it about Hello Kitty that makes her so darn cute? Even though we never see her smiling, she's brought smiles to millions of people around the world. Being that she's a lil' cutie, and loved by children, hipsters, and grown ups alike, it's not surprising that she would make appearances on everything from handbags, to clothing, to of course, cakes! I can't tell you how often we get requests for the Hello Kitty theme. OK, quite often, and not every Hello Kitty cake we do makes it to the website, but here are a few of our favorite cakes of our girl Kitty. Hello, Kitty!
