A Super WOW, Super WHY! Birthday Cake

Leave it to our clients to introduce us to the latest in educational animation. When we got the order in for the PBS KIDS Super WHY! cake, we took one look at the animation style and Super Cute characters and knew this was going to be a special and fun cake to make. It also helped that the parents were super sweet and super excited about the cake from the beginning, even if they didn't know what Rick was going to design for them. The design would be a surprise to Rick as well until he was actually making the cake, but we always knew it would be super! This was the first in a number of cakes we made over the 4th of July holiday weekend, and with these super cute characters with stars and playful stripes, it was a memorable way to kick off a festive weekend!

In Memory of MJ

I tried to treat today like any other day, but like so many people have had MJ on my mind and it's been difficult to focus on cakes. The first thing we saw when we turned on CNN this morning was the motorcade heading towards the Staples Center. We were glued to the TV while eating breakfast and since we had to come into work we set up the DVR to tape the memorial today, which we'll watch tonight. Luckily CNN was running the live feed as well so in between talking to clients on the phone and answering emails I clicked my way over to CNN Facebook to catch a glimpse of the memorial. We're far from Michael Jackson's biggest fans but as far back as I can remember in my musical memories, he has been there. Going back to childhood, I remember rollerskating to "Rock with You" at the local rink. In elementary school in the early 80's, one of my teachers, Mrs. Goto took it upon herself to share her newest discovery, MTV with her class. She was a bit of an oddity, who was obsessed with Snoopy, but I can't blame her music tastes. She introduced our class to Madonna, Michael Jackson and Cindy Lauper, because kids just want to have fun after all, and let us watch MTV during our breaks. One of the videos that has always stayed with me from Mrs. Goto's class was "Thriller" which we watched over and over. Other MJ videos followed and thus, a life-long music obsession was born.

I recall the day I went to Tower Records (RIP) to purchase the 7" of "We are the World". I think I was around 12 years old and came home and played that record to exhaust. Then the video came out which MTV played to exhaust. Who could forget all the kids running around in their MJ wanna-bes jacket full of zippers and of course the moonwalk. Name a kid during that time who didn't try and do the moonwalk. I certainly did.

Because of my age, I worked my way backwards in the Michael Jackson timeline. First there was his early solo years (Off the Wall, one my all-time favorite songs! and Rock with You), then I discovered the Jackson Five which was fantastic, and remained some of my favorites throughout adulthood. "Thriller" was magical! I followed some of his later albums but became infatuated with music other than pop and branched out. Years passed, I met Rick, and in the beginning of our relationship I'd play my "Off the Wall" album. When we were married in California a few years later and had our meeting with our DJ, our "must have" list to play at the reception included, not surprisingly, "Off the Wall."

"So tonight, gotta leave that nine to five upon the shelf and just enjoy yourself..."

We've decided today we will not write about the cakes and take the time to reflect on the musical memories over the years. This is where our thoughts are today. We invite you to leave your thoughts and comments and share with us any musical memories you wish.

We'll be back tomorrow with more cakes!

A Beautiful Vow Renewal

All images courtesy of Absolutely Loved, Stefanie and Anna Riedel

We wanted to start this week off revelling in LOVE! Very recently we helped our couple celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary with a vow renewal ceremony and two cakes designed to honor the special occasion. You wouldn't know by looking at this lovely couple and how smitten they are with each other that this wasn't a wedding ceremony. These two lovebirds seemed as lost in the moment of the ceremony and each other as any of our wedding couples, and were just as romantic. The celebration took place at the Oasis World Estates "Oceanfront Oasis" home, owned by (supermodel) Kathy Ireland. We've worked at this location before and the home is a beautiful oceanfront retreat. The important components were there. Our client is a photographer by trade and selecting a photographer to capture her special day was of utmost importance. She chose world-class photographer, Stefanie Riedel of Absolutely Loved, which we thought was a perfect match once we met her and her husband. Stefanie is one of the most romantic photographers we know and we fall in love with her images each time we see them. See for yourself with these Absolutely bee-u-tiful shots taken of the couple and their son, below, and visit Stefanie's website to see her incredible portfolio!

One of the most touching aspects of this vow renewal aside from how obviously in love this couple is, is the inclusion of their son, which is why the second cake was ordered. Their main cake was a handcrafted cherry blossom design which was lovely. The cake intended to honor them as a family had writing all over it which included "Mommy", "Daddy" and "Anson" and words such as "family" "love" and "forever". So sweet! Rick designed the cake to match the colors of their cherry blossom cake and even put a couple blossoms on it.

All our best to our wonderful couple. We hope to see them in another 10 years!

and next up, a Super cake for the kids. See Why tomorrow ...

Alaskans go Hawaiian

All images courtesy of Jayson Tanega

We fell in love with these images when we saw them. Thank you to photographer Jayson Tanega for providing them! Occasionally we get requests for weddings with very small guest counts, and we don't think just because you have a small wedding that you should have an insignificant cake. Sondra, our bride and her fiance flew to Hawaii from Alaska for their wedding with just some family members and close friends, to help them celebrate their beach wedding. They asked Rick to design for their wedding a cake with a Hawaiian tiki on top with bamboo around it and handcrafted flowers similar to other cakes we've done and I thought he did a beautiful job. The couple was very pleased with the design as well. I adore the parasol Sondra was carrying during the wedding photos which was then placed behind the tiki cake -- very cute!

Aloha, til next time!
