A Stroll Down Memory Lane - 2010, Part 3
Today, we explore Part 3 of a retrospective of cakelava cakes made in 2010. We began our stroll down memory lane in late January 2013, starting with the year 2005, our first year in business, and have selected cakes from each year to share. If you missed Part 1 of 2010's post, you can view it here, and Part 2 here. You can read the entire series by visiting the Archives on the blog.
One of our favorite designs (above, photo by Mike Pham) was a 7-tier towering black, white and silver wedding cake made for Jessica and David. The stunning cake was 3 feet tall with handcrafted flowers and a vase topper, piped swirls and handmade decorations. Rick spent much of the week before the wedding making the decorations. The gorgeous cake was featured on a number of internet websites and in Wedding Essentials Magazine.

Jessica and David's Wedding Cake
![]() |
Jessica and David were married at a Waikiki resort less than 24 hours ago in front of several hundred guests. We've been looking forward to making their wedding cake ever since it was designed and upon completion it quickly became one of our new favorite designs! Working with Jessica and David was a wonderful experience! They encouraged Rick's creativity, wanting a showstopping design of contemporary elegance with a minimum of 5 tiers. This cake was 7 tiers, including the floral vase topper and a height of 3 feet. Their colors were ivory, black and a pewter/silver color. Rick had been working on all the handcrafted decorations throughout the week and spent most of Saturday making the cake. When I first saw the finished cake, my jaw dropped. I knew Jessica and David would fall in love with it. The towering wedding cake commanded a presence in the large ballroom decorated in black, white and silver. Everything looked gorgeous and I only wish we had a chance to give our best to the couple when we delivered the cake. We would have loved to see their reaction!
Jessica and David selected three flavors from our menu to serve to their guests -- Kona Toffee Crunch, Peanut Butter Fudgey and Strawberries Chantilly. We hope our couple loved their cake as much as we enjoyed making it for them. Congratulations, Jessica and David!

Her Super Sweet 16 and A PEZ Wedding Cake

Yesterday I couldn't resist the temptation to write about Amy's wedding dress cake, even if it meant leaving our regularly scheduled program of the Wild Weekend of Cakes. After a brief, but beautiful interruption, we're back and ready to share more goodies with you.
Starting with a bright and FUN Super Sweet 16 cake. Shortly before we headed to our Elegant/ tropical-meets-STAR WARS wedding, we helped Kealaka'i welcome year 16 in style. Her father called us in January for her late February party but we were already booked and had to turn him away. In early February he called again and really wanted Rick to make his daughter's cake and offered us all sorts of dates, none of which we were available unfortunately. He couldn't hide his dissapointment. He and his daughter are close and wanted her to have a very special cake. Fate must have intervened because I talked to Rick about it and after looking at the calendar which had BOOKED written over each date he wanted, Rick then said "I'll do it." Rick makes the final call on requests and it surprises me how many cakes he can take. He has a huge heart and genuinely wants to make people happy through cake, even if it means we're working 12 hours days for the week. In the end, the smiles and Thank You's are worth it! Shortly after the Sweet 16 cake was picked up, we received a call from Kealakai's father saying how much he loved the cake, followed by an ecstatic email from the birthday girl herself along with a few photos from the party. Their huge smiles reminded us why we do what we do.
Unlike the Sweet 16 cake , our PEZ-themed black and white wedding cake for Taylor and Scott had been ordered almost a year ago and we had been looking forward to it because well, it's PEZ! When we intially met with the couple they brought in their own bride/groom PEZ toppers and Rick designed a cake around this. I love the design he came up with! It was striking and elegant, and our first PEZ themed wedding cake. I'm guessing it won't be our last. Much happiness to Taylor and Scott in their new life as Mr. and Mrs. (PEZ)!

Hope you've enjoyed seeing some of these cakes. Have a wonderful weekend!

Next Featured Wedding Sneak Peek - Christie and Patton

All images courtesy of Visionari
Christie and Patton were married on August 15, 2008 and have the right recipe for our next Featured Wedding on cakelava.com. Take two of the sweetest people around (who happen to be extremely easy on the eyes). Add The Bayer Estate, a beautiful tropical ceremony and reception location. Mix-in the following A-list vendors – Visionari for photography, Designs by Hemingway for floral design, linens, lighting and crystal accents, Angel De Armas for cinematography, Ginniberries for catering, Jacque Rojas for Hair and Makeup, Accel Rentals, Showtime Djs, and yours truly on cake. Add a heaping tablespoon of black and white throughout, and a fabulous chic wedding cake gone animalistic and it’s a recipe for an incredible wedding!
This wasn’t the first time we are featuring Christie and Patton on our blog. We wrote about the couple in a post called “From Destination i do to … I Do”. They were the photogenic cover and featured couple of Destination i Do magazine. Christie is no stranger to the wedding industry, as she works for one of the best cinematographers in Hawaii, the fantastic Angel De Armas. Patton is in the Army’s Special Forces division and the couple chose to have a military wedding, which we thought was a really nice touch.
Christie and Patton’s cake, like our current Featured Wedding couple, Robyn and Barry, had an involved delivery. Since you don’t know exactly what the cake looks like yet, it may not be evident why it would require extra special attention. It was one of those deliveries where one of us was in the back with the cake (in this case, me) making sure nothing happened to it while the other one drove. There were many adornments on the cake that required TLC, and we weren’t about to let anything happen to Christie and Patton’s special cake. Although their color palette was black, white and accents of green, Christie and Patton went va-va-voom for the inside of their cake, choosing our signature Rainbowlicious flavor and the Hawaii Five-0.
Christie sent us an amazing testimonial that is on cakelava.com, and also wanted us to express the following on her behalf:
I'd love people to know that I've witnessed the hard work of all of the talented people in the industry in Hawaii and it was a pleasure to have them the day of my wedding. It was kind of a different I think compared to most brides....I didn't worry at all about anyone (vendors) being late or not doing the work I expected - I completely trusted them 100% - and gave almost everyone free reign in design - especially you guys and Debbie Hemingway :) I have seen what everyone is capable of and wanted each vendor to be able to shine in whatever way they were capable.....and it all meshed very well :) I just feel so blessed to have had my handpick in vendors - I never had a dream wedding growing up but once I started working with Angel (De Armas) I had my dream vendors....and I got them all on August 15th!
-- Christie N -- August 2008
Christie and Patton, we feel honored to have worked with you and had so much fun making your cake. You are two of the most warm spirited, upbeat people around. We wish you many years of happiness!
-- Sasha & Rick
