Kidrobot Birthday Cake

Until you make it, there's a first time for everything. This is our first Kidrobot and tokidoki themed birthday cake. We've made the tokidoki birthday cakes a number of times, and if you don't yet know what a tokidoki is, you can visit our cakelava crash course on the blog's side bar and read "Fun with tokidoki". We're into the urban animation cakes. They are hip, lots of fun, and we always learn about new characters. But they are also a LOT of work! This time we learned about the "Dunny" characters of Kidrobot and got to play with our familiar tokidoki friends again. The cake was made for a child's urban animation themed birthday party. Rick crafted and painted each piece by hand, a painstaking effort if I ever saw one, but according to the child's grandmother who was quite blown away when she saw the cake, well worth it.

When tokidoki visits the Sushi Bar

When we said earlier we couldn't have dreamed up a more diverse selection of cakes last weekend, we weren't kidding. For Leah's 8th birthday cake Rick incorporated two of her favorite things -- tokidoki and sushi. We put her favorite tokidoki, Tsuru, in a prominent position on the cake and surrounded her with her BFF's where she could rock and roll all night (and party every day). Leah's mother informed us her daughter's favorite food is sushi and she particularly loves to go to a local place here that serves the sushi on a conveyor belt. Rick set forth to give Leah a cake beyond hers and any tokidoki fans wildest dreams, and handcrafted each tokidoki and piece of sushi on the cake. He cleverly created a conveyor belt at the base of the cake and placed some sushi's and tokidiokis on it. So cute! Not wanting to leave anyone out of this party, Rick added little faces to the sushi which I thought was completely adorable. We fell completely head over heels for this cake and luckily so did Leah's mother and another little girl when they came to pick it up. Talk about a reaction. They almost went into shock when they saw it and I wasn't sure they were going to leave. They were afraid to have anyone cut into it. Having now made 3 custom tokidoki cakes, we're starting to get to know our tokidoki friends better each time and have developed a fondness for the little guys. Cute, cute, Oh So Cute! - The Girly Pink Tokidoki Cake

Happy Monday, everyone! Over the weekend we took a double dose of Vitamin Cute and Rick created this girly pink Tokidoki cake for Autumn's first birthday. Even the inside was pink with our Guava Lava flavor. This cake had been on order since shortly after our first Tokidoki cake was made for Laneah's 14th birthday. For the 14th birthday cake, Rick made that one in black and white and went for a more sophisticated look, and for Autumn, he opted to keep things cute and playful, and used different Tokidoki characters. Has anyone who is familiar with Tokidoki's ever counted how many different characters there are? There must be hundreds of them! You can probably tell by looking how involved these cakes are to make, but all the labor is worth the end product, and it doesn't get much cuter than this!

Kudos to Autumn's mother for creating a Tokidoki themed birthday party, to match her girly pink cake. Rick and I were both impressed at how much thought and creativity went into the centerpieces and favors. Here are a few photos snapped at the outdoor party:

Fun with tokidoki

When our client Tina ordered a tokidoki theme for her daughter's 14th birthday cake it was our first introduction to tokidoki, which is a bit embarassing considering I wrote my thesis in college on Japanese Anime and have an appreciation for pop culture kitsch. Tina sent us many images to work off of and each one slightly more fun and bizarre than the next. Talking to her, I got an instant crash course on tokidoki. We should have known from the "Latte" and "Leche" milk carton tokidokis that they were of Italian origin but I assumed they were Japanese. For anyone (besides us) not previously familiar with tokidoki, they are the brainchild of Italian artist and designer Simone Legno. There is a huge tokidoki fan base, and an extensive tokidoki website and of course, a blog.

For our tokidoki cake, Tina turned over the design to Rick. Her only request was to have the base color of the cake be in black and white and to try and incorporate the girl image in some way. Rick made all the tokidoki figures by hand and tried to put as many on the cake as possible to mimic the tokidoki design style. Tina chose our Kona Toffee Crunch flavor for the cake. When we delivered the cake, Tina and her husband were thrilled and excited to celebrate with their daughter Laneah, her friends and her many tokidokis.
